My friend Dan commissioned me to do a series of 40 small drawings to illustrate his #40daysofredemption series of posts for Lent - they can be seen on his blog Redeeming Sound. I was pushed for time so just did a series of quick sketches in pencil - but I think they mostly work, and they look good as a set below. Not all of the articles went up as planned in the end but I think they'll be going up over the next few weeks so follow Redeeming Sound on Twitter if you're interested. I've been working on this painting for a few weeks now, just doing an hour here and there - and it is finally finished. It is inspired by a line from a song by Radical Face called 'Welcome Home'. Apologies to my friends/family members who know about ships who will spot all the mistakes in the ropes, etc. This piece is done entirely by hand - no digital colouring or touching up.

"Ships are launching from my chest" - pencil, ink, gouache, watercolour pencil. Approx 26 x 39 cm.

I think I'll have it produced as a print to buy at some point but for now I'm keeping it to myself... Click images below to view detail.

Had a nice evening tonight hanging out with other House of Illustration volunteers as part of our collective 'HOI-polloi' - we all drew portraits of each other and I ate all the crisps.

Couple of things I've done for my dad in the last few months - Album cover for the mix CD I gave him for Christmas (aka 'DADLIST 2014') and a birthday card for February.

I was commissioned by Alice and Peter to draw some handwritten text in mint and coral for their wedding invitation - the final result is below:

I just rediscovered this comic that I did in 2010 as part of the Chelsea College of Art Book Illustration course - I had scanned it but never pieced it together. Anyway, here it is (click to view larger):

More life class. I was trying to be more expressive and loose in style this week - not sure if it was working so you'll see that some of the later drawings are focused more on accuracy. I was looking at drawings by Riccardo Mannelli this week and thinking how much I'd like to get his sense of three dimensional muscles and skin texture - but then I also love the expressiveness of Egon Schiele etc... I want to develop to be able to do both and still have my own style but don't know if that's possible. I also want to get better at composition because I can never fit the feet on the page...! (Should pretend I'm doing it on purpose really...) Anyway, click images below to see full sketches.

First time in ages that I've actually managed to get to life class 2 weeks in a row - amazing. I've also never drawn a model before who decided to wear sunglasses the whole way through and chew gum. Anyway, click images below to view larger.

This week at life class we were drawing a disconcertingly beautiful man - whichever Renaissance artist it was who said the young male form is the pinnacle of beauty on this earth was not far wrong.
