I had a few days in France last week with my parents - was a great chance to do some sketching, partly because my dad (James Nairne) brought lots of really nice pens that I was able to use (thanks pa). I really need to be more active in my sketchbook and less precious about it - it keeps me drawing more regularly and builds my confidence with experimentation. Here's my sketchbook pages from the trip (click to see full size and scroll through images): The bottom left sketch was my first experience using liquid pencil - pretty weird stuff. Easy to move around but quite a strange texture, not sure how I felt about it but interesting to try.
Doug and Olivia asked me to put together a design for their wedding that could be used on service sheets and the table plan - they weren't too rigid with their guidelines but did want it to include their pet tortoise, Frank, if possible...! I drew a series of draft designs for them to choose from (see below) and then developed their chosen design into a final emblem in watercolour.
Had a nice evening tonight hanging out with other House of Illustration volunteers as part of our collective 'HOI-polloi' - we all drew portraits of each other and I ate all the crisps. (yes Esther was wearing novelty winged goggles)
Couple of things I've done for my dad in the last few months - Album cover for the mix CD I gave him for Christmas (aka 'DADLIST 2014') and a birthday card for February.
I just rediscovered this comic that I did in 2010 as part of the Chelsea College of Art Book Illustration course - I had scanned it but never pieced it together. Anyway, here it is (click to view larger):
More life class. I was trying to be more expressive and loose in style this week - not sure if it was working so you'll see that some of the later drawings are focused more on accuracy. I was looking at drawings by Riccardo Mannelli this week and thinking how much I'd like to get his sense of three dimensional muscles and skin texture - but then I also love the expressiveness of Egon Schiele etc... I want to develop to be able to do both and still have my own style but don't know if that's possible. I also want to get better at composition because I can never fit the feet on the page...! (Should pretend I'm doing it on purpose really...) Anyway, click images below to see full sketches.
First time in ages that I've actually managed to get to life class 2 weeks in a row - amazing. I've also never drawn a model before who decided to wear sunglasses the whole way through and chew gum. Anyway, click images below to view larger.
This week at life class we were drawing a disconcertingly beautiful man - whichever Renaissance artist it was who said the young male form is the pinnacle of beauty on this earth was not far wrong. Anyway (ahem), click images below to view full drawings, and see captions for lengths of time each sketch took and the media used.
